How to Tolerate Irritating Skin Care Products

The most common irritating skin care products are acne medication and anti-aging medication. The chemicals in those products consist of topical retinoids, salicylic acid, and benzoyl peroxide. These chemicals are known to cause irritation to the skin when patients initially use them. Also, some acids such as glycolic acid and lactic acid will cause similar symptoms.

When you bring this problem up to a dermatologist, most of them will tell you to the same thing, so we went ahead and combined everything that they say into one:

  • Start by using a small amount or follow the directions provided on the box.
  • Do not start by using the product very often until your skin can tolerate it, then your body will be able to handle a high frequency of the product.
  • If your skin is irritating because of the product, moisturize frequently until you skin is not irritated anymore

Sometimes, your skin will never be able to tolerate it and you should just stop using it. You should try the methods above to allow your body to try to tolerate the skin care product but if the problem consists for more than 2 weeks you should just ditch the product and try something new. You should consult your dermatologist because they are the skin experts and will be able to find the right product for you.
